Just as a house is built on foundations, the basis of a website is its HTML code. This acronym stands for Hypertext Markup Language (Hypertext Markup Language, in English). It is regarded as a standard for creating web pages on the Internet, as it allows the entire structure of a page to be built using sections, paragraphs, links, tags, attributes and many other elements.

To summarise, HTML is used for developing web pages. Developers write HTML code to design a website’s interface using graphical elements such as images and videos, text, hyperlinks, etc.

It is worth noting that, although for many people outside the field of IT and programming this is indeed the case, HTML is not a programming language, as it does not allow you to perform calculations, make logical decisions or manipulate data dynamically.

Main structure of an HTML element

All lHTML pages contain a series of HTML elements consisting of tags and attributes organised into different blocks. A tag tells search engines where an element begins and where it ends, whilst attributes are used to describe the graphical characteristics of an element.

The three main parts found in all HTML elements are:

  • Opening: is used to indicate the start of an element, and is bounded by anti-lambdas (< >). For example, to create a paragraph, you need to write an element <p>.
  • Contents: This is the part of the label that users will see; it is what gives the element its meaning.
  • Closing: marks the end of an element in the same way as its start, but with the addition of a slash. For example, the closing tag for the element <p> would be </p>.
     

However, there are some exceptions, such as the tag <img> or the label <a> which we shall look at below. These tags do not have a closing tag beyond the corresponding anti-lambda, as they cannot contain any other nested elements. Main structure of an HTML page

In terms of structure, the basic elements required to create an HTML page are:

  • <html>: It defines the start and end of a document.
  • : It contains essential non-visual information about the HTML document in the form of metadata.
  • <body>: It contains all the visible content of a web page.

 

With just these three opening and closing elements, you can create a document HTML. However, there are countless other elements you need to be familiar with in order to structure an entire HTML page and make the most of its features.

Main HTML tags

Below, we have listed the main tags that are used in HTML to create standard blocks:

  • Label <h1> a <h6>: Define headings at different levels to create a hierarchy of content relevance for search engines. The most important heading on a page is a <h1> and the one with the least, in a <h6>. However, most web pages tend to use only the following headings <h1>, <h2> y <h3>.

  • Label <p>: Define a paragraph.

  • Label <a>: Create a link to another page or resource.

  • Label <img>: Insert an image into the page.

      • Label <strong>: Defines text that is emphasised or stands out, and is displayed in bold in most browsers.

      Example:

      <p>This is a text <strong>important</strong>.</p>

      • tag: Defines emphasised text that appears in italics in most browsers.

      Example:

      <p>This is a text <em>emphasised</em>.</p>

      These are just a few examples that illustrate HTML tags the most basic ones, but there are hundreds of them that fulfil very important functions in a website’s interface and structure.
