Z-Index It is a fundamental property in web development and graphical interface design. It is used in CSS (Cascading Style Sheets) to control the overlapping of elements on a web page, that is, which elements should appear in front of or behind others when they overlap on the screen.

In web design, not all elements are on a single layer. There are situations where certain blocks, menus, images or text boxes overlap, and this is where the Z-Index plays a key role in determining the «stacking order» of these elements.

How the Z-Index works

The property z-index It works by assigning an integer value to elements with ‘relative’, ‘absolute’, ‘fixed’ or ‘sticky’ positioning. The more the greater the value, further up the element will appear in the browser’s rendering stack.

For example, an element with `z-index: 10;` will be displayed on top of another with `z-index: 5;`, regardless of its position in the HTML code.

It is important to bear in mind that the Z-Index only works on elements with a defined position. If an element does not have a position set, the Z-Index will have no effect.

A practical example of how to use the Z-Index

Imagine you have a drop-down menu on a web page which, when opened, should appear on top of the rest of the page’s content. However, by default, the menu appears below an image that is also at the top of the page.

To resolve this and ensure that the menu is displayed on top of the image, you can use the Z-Index in CSS as follows:

.top-image {
    position: relative;
    z-index: 5;
}

.dropdown-menu {
    position: absolute;
    z-index: 10;
}

Important considerations regarding the Z-Index

  • Stacking contexts: Any element with a position and Z-Index can create a stacking context its own. This means that the child elements will be stacked relative to that container and not relative to the rest of the page.
  • Negative values: Z-Index also accepts negative values, which allows an element to be positioned behind others with higher values or the default reference value.
  • Excessive use: Overuse of high Z-Index values can lead to maintenance issues and unexpected overlaps. It is recommended that you structure your HTML properly and use Z-Index only when it is truly necessary.

Why is the Z-Index important?

Controlling the Z-Index is essential for creating clean and functional interfaces, particularly when working with:

  • Pop-up menus
  • Modals and pop-ups
  • Tooltips
  • Image galleries or sliders
  • Interactive maps and overlays

Mastering Z-Index enables developers and designers to create more intuitive user experiences, ensuring that key elements are not hidden or cause usability issues.

In short, the Z-Index It is the tool that gives you control over the «three-dimensional space» of a web page, allowing you to decide what is visible and what is hidden in situations where elements overlap.
