It forms part of the Hadoop ecosystem, a framework for open-source software used for the distributed data processing and the big data analysis information.

What is HDFS used for?

HDFS It was designed to solve the problems of scalability y performance in the processing of large amounts of data. Its main function is store and distribute data efficiently in computer clusters, enabling the access and the simultaneous processing the use of this data by various users and applications.

Some of the key features of HDFS are:

Data storage reliable and fault-tolerant.

Designed to work with low-cost hardware.

Provides high storage capacity y data transfer.

Optimised for use with large amounts of data.

Integrated with other components of the Hadoop ecosystem.

How does HDFS work?

HDFS It consists of two main components: a main server (NameNode) and several data nodes (DataNodes). The NameNode is responsible for managing the file system and coordinating access to the data, whilst the DataNodes store the data in a distributed manner across the cluster.

The basic operation of HDFS can be summarised in the following steps:

The NameNode receives a request from a client application to access a file.

The NameNode queries its metadata table to determine the location of the data blocks for the requested file on the DataNodes.

The NameNode returns a list of DataNodes that store the data blocks requested by the client.

The client contacts the DataNodes directly from the list provided to retrieve the data blocks.

The client combines the recovered data blocks into a single file.

The client sends an acknowledgement to the DataNodes and the NameNode.

HDFS uses a strategy of replication to ensure data availability and fault tolerance. Files are divided into blocks and replicated across several DataNodes in the cluster. Replication typically takes place across three DataNodes, but this can be configured according to the user’s requirements.

Additional features and benefits of HDFS

Horizontal scalability: HDFS can be scaled horizontally, which means that additional storage capacity can be added simply by adding new nodes to a cluster.

Operation on low-cost hardware: HDFS is designed to run on low-cost hardware, making it affordable for a wide range of organisations.

Block-based storage: HDFS stores data in large blocks, which reduces the overhead involved in searching for and mapping small blocks, thereby increasing the efficiency of data storage and retrieval.

Data replication: HDFS creates multiple copies of each file on different nodes to ensure fault tolerance and data availability. The default replication is set to 3 copies, but this can be adjusted to suit individual users’ needs.

Concurrency control: HDFS enables concurrent access to and reading of files by multiple clients, thereby increasing the efficiency of data processing.

Integration with the Hadoop ecosystem: HDFS integrates with other components of the Hadoop ecosystem, such as MapReduce y YARN, which facilitates distributed processing and large-scale data analysis.

The use of HDFS in industry

HDFS is used across a wide range of industries, including:

Data science y data analysis: Companies use HDFS to store large volumes of data and process them using data analytics tools, such as Apache Spark y Hadoop MapReduce.

The Internet and technology: Technology companies use HDFS to store and process data generated by their web services and mobile applications, such as access logs, usage data and location data.

Banking and finance: Banks and financial institutions use HDFS to store and analyse large amounts of data relating to transactions, customer behaviour and fraud prevention.

Insurance: Insurance companies use HDFS to store and analyse data on claims, policies and customers, which helps them to assess risks more effectively and offer more accurate premiums.

Health and biotechnology: The healthcare and biotechnology sector uses HDFS to store and analyse genomic data, clinical information and research data in order to improve our understanding of diseases and develop new treatments.

In a nutshell, HDFS is a distributed file system which offers an efficient and scalable solution for store y process large amounts of data on low-cost hardware clusters.
