The hard disk partition<\/strong> is an important concept in computer science, as it enables the organisation of storage on a disk or solid-state drive (SSD).<\/strong> Broadly speaking, the process is fairly straightforward, as it involves dividing the physical space on the disc into separate sections, each with its own capacity for store data,<\/strong> improving information security and optimising its performance.<\/p>\n

Partitioning a hard drive allows you, amongst other things, to install several operating systems<\/strong>, for example, to keep personal files separate from work files and even create a space for the backups.<\/strong> This process is becoming easier and easier, as tools such as the Windows Disk Management<\/strong> have simplified this process.<\/p>\n

What is a hard disk partition?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

As we have mentioned, the disk partition<\/strong> is the logical division of a hard drive<\/strong> or SSDs in separate areas. This means that each partition can have its own file system<\/strong>, as NTFS, FAT32 or exFAT<\/strong>, an aspect that defines how data is stored and managed.<\/p>\n

These partitions are essential for improving the system\u2019s flexibility. For example, you can have one partition dedicated exclusively to the operating system, another for applications and another for personal documents. This makes data loss much less likely in the event of a problem, as well as making it easier to format and reinstall the system without affecting other files.<\/p>\n

As we shall see, there are two types of partitions<\/strong> main ones: primary partitions<\/strong> y extended partitions.<\/strong> The former are required to boot the system, whilst the latter allow you to create several logical divisions<\/strong> within a single physical partition.<\/p>\n

Types of hard disk partitions<\/strong><\/h2>\n

To choose between a partition type<\/strong> Whichever one you choose, you should bear in mind your needs and how you intend to use the drive. Here are the most common types available:<\/p>\n

Primary partitions<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Here are the main sections of a disc, which can have up to four primary partitions, or three primary partitions and one extended partition.<\/strong> They are essential for installing operating systems.<\/p>\n

Extended partitions<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Extended partitions allow us to overcome the limit of four physical partitions, creating a container within which several partitions can be created logical divisions.<\/strong> This hard drive partition is useful for store data<\/strong> additional ones without needing to use another disc.<\/p>\n

Logical divisions<\/strong><\/h3>\n

They consist of subpartitions within a extended partition,<\/strong> They work in a similar way to primary drives, but with the distinction that they cannot boot an operating system on their own.<\/p>\n

How do you create a hard drive partition in Windows 10?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

At this point, we\u2019re going to show you a short tutorial on How to partition a hard drive easily in Windows 10.<\/strong> Watch out!<\/p>\n

The first thing you need to do is open the Start menu in Windows 10 and type the word \u201cpartition\u201d.<\/strong> That way, the system will take you straight to the tool \u201ccreate and format hard disk partitions\u201d.<\/strong> All you need to do is click on it and the relevant programme will open.<\/p>\n

The next step is to select the hard drive on which you want to create the partition to open the drop-down menu. The thing is, what we want to do now is make some space on the hard drive, so we\u2019ll choose \u201creduce volume\u201d<\/strong>. We will now partition the hard drive into smaller sections. Remember that in this section you can also delete a partition or format the drive to wipe it clean before starting the process.<\/p>\n

Once we click, a new window will appear in which we must enter how much space you want to leave free.<\/strong> The amount must always be entered in MB.<\/p>\n

Once the process is complete, the new partition will appear in black under the heading \u201c\u201dunassigned\".<\/strong> Here, you\u2019ll need to right-click again to create a new simple volume. Don\u2019t worry \u2013 a wizard will guide you through the process of creating a new partition every step of the way.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s our turn now create a new partition,<\/strong> by selecting the size again. You can either leave it as the default or edit it, but when you\u2019ve finished, you must click \u2018Next\u2019.<\/p>\n

Windows will ask you to Add a letter to the unit<\/strong> so that the partition can be used as extra storage space. But what if we want to install an operating system? In that case, click on the option \u201cDo not assign a drive letter or path\u201d<\/strong> and that way it won\u2019t use it as a storage drive.<\/p>\n

As the process draws to a close, it will now ask you if you want to format the partition,<\/strong> What you need to do. Here you can choose andthe file system<\/strong> that you want to use on the partition, as well as giving it a name to make it easier to recognise.<\/p>\n

Finally, Windows itself will summarise the whole process for you, so all you need to do is click \u201cFinish\u201d for the system to create your new partition. And that\u2019s it! You\u2019ll have everything sorted.<\/p>\n
