The cypherpunk movement, a term combining \u00abcipher\u00bb and \u00abcyberpunk\u00bb, emerged in the early 1990s as a visionary response to concerns about privacy and individual freedom in the emerging digital age. Founded by a group of cryptographers, programmers and tech activists<\/strong>, The movement was characterised by its strong commitment to the use of cryptography and technology as tools to protect individual freedom and privacy in cyberspace.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This was a highly influential trend that generated major debates on the boundaries of security and privacy<\/strong> The principles of which have governed many online security policies.<\/p>\n

In this Euroinnova article we are going to explain how the Cypherpunk movement developed, what are its principles and what is the perennial legacy it has left in our society.<\/p>\n

The forerunner of the Cypherpunk movement<\/h2>\n

In the 1970s and 1980s, we witnessed a radical change in the role of technology in society: computers went from being an inaccessible product for many to becoming widespread. In other words, the personal computer<\/strong> thanks to the invention of microprocessors. This was possible because in the microprocessors<\/strong> all the essential functions of a computer could be stored, but in a smaller machine for all budgets.<\/p>\n

Some of the first computers that caused the biggest sensation in the market were the Apple II and the IBM computer. In addition, ARPANET<\/strong>, The Internet, a network linking computers in the US Ministry of Defence, served as a precursor to the invention of the Internet. This convergence of various technologies would give rise to the network we know today in which we are all permanently interconnected.<\/p>\n

It was this generalisation of computers and their increasing use in all social strata that raised concerns about online privacy and the security of the personal data we store on our devices. This is how the Cypherpunk movement began to take shape.<\/p>\n

The birth of Cypherpunk<\/h2>\n

Cypherpunk was a mainly ideological current born out of the potential threats and unknowns that part of the population perceived in new technologies regarding the privacy of our actions on the Internet and personal information. Timothy C. May<\/strong>, a retired Intel engineer, articulated many of these ideas in his 1988 crypto-anarchist manifesto, which would serve as a precursor to Bitcoin.\u00a0<\/p>\n

In this paper, May envisaged a future in which cryptography would fundamentally alter the nature of enterprises<\/strong> and would give unlimited power to governments to interfere in private matters such as financial transactions.<\/p>\n

The Cypherpunks movement finally coalesced and was given a definitive boost with the creation of the mailing list called Cypherpunks<\/strong> in 1992 by Eric Hughes, Timothy C. May and John Gilmore. Its main function was to provide a forum for the exchange of opinions on cryptography, digital privacy, information policy<\/strong> and other related topics. Some topics were more technical and others eminently philosophical. At its peak, subscribers to this mailing list numbered in the thousands.<\/p>\n

The forums generated lively and thought-provoking discussions on how cryptography could protect data privacy and individual freedom. These virtual spaces attracted many experts from fields such as cryptography, computer engineering, law and political activism.<\/p>\n

As the Internet expanded in the 1990s<\/strong>, As the cypherpunk movement grew in visibility and relevance, its ideas began to influence wider debates about privacy, freedom of expression in the digital age and the regulation of various aspects of the internet. Personalities such as Julian Assange<\/strong>, nowadays a very controversial figure worldwide and founder of WikiLeaks<\/a>, emerged from the Cypherpunk environment.<\/p>\n

Cypherpunk Manifesto<\/h2>\n

The Cypherpunk manifesto wrote that Eric Hughes<\/strong>, Hughes, one of the founders of the Cypherpunk movement, in March 1993. Hughes was a mathematician and programmer heavily involved in forums on privacy and cryptography, a hot topic in the emerging digital culture of the early 1990s.<\/p>\n

Hughes wrote the manifesto in response to these concerns, articulating a vision of how technology, specifically cryptography, could be used to protect privacy in the digital age.\u00a0<\/p>\n
