On 13 June, political leaders from many countries met to discuss issues concerning the global economy: the fight against climate change, strategic alliances with the nations of the African continent, the difficult situation in the war in Ukraine, the conflict in the Gaza Strip and, most notably, the conflict in the Middle East and North Africa, the role of artificial intelligence and its future in society.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The G7 is a a grouping of well-established democracies created in 1975 that meets annually to discuss current affairs.<\/strong> and a large weight in the world. This group includes the United States, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United Kingdom.<\/p>\n

Thus, the most important personalities who attended on behalf of their countries were: Joe Biden, Justin Trudeau, Emmanuel Macron, Olaf Scholz, Giorgia Meloni, Fumio Kishida and Rishi Sunak. Representing the European Union as a whole were Ursula von der Leyen and Charles Michel.<\/p>\n

Presidents and equivalent public figures from many other countries around the world with ties to the West also came. However, the most noteworthy participation in the G7 summit <\/strong>of 2024 was none other than... Pope Francis!<\/p>\n

Background on artificial intelligence in the G7<\/h2>\n

Since generative AI became popular with software such as ChatGPT, Gemini or Midjourney, governments and large companies have taken a special interest in the functioning and applications of artificial intelligence for economic and moral reasons.<\/p>\n

This led, as early as 2021, to the European Union drafting and approving by an absolute majority a Artificial Intelligence Act<\/strong>, which is the first comprehensive global AI regulation that ensures the safety and good practice of artificial intelligence in all member countries.<\/p>\n

The Act classifies AI systems into four risk categories according to their potential harm. High-risk systems, such as those used in healthcare or transportation, are subject to strict requirements, while low-risk systems, such as chatbots or spam filters, have fewer obligations. The law prohibits systems that pose an unacceptable risk, such as those that manipulate human behaviour in dangerous ways or use facial recognition for mass surveillance.<\/p>\n

The formulation of this law, clearly insufficient for the challenges posed by artificial intelligence today, highlighted the need to further elucidate the role of the fast-growing emerging technology AI and the desirable action of policymakers <\/strong>The EU's role in the face of its permeation of all aspects of citizens' lives.<\/p>\n

What was said at the G7 summit about artificial intelligence?<\/h2>\n

Society, and especially political leaders, are not fully aware of the implications of the emergence and spread of AI in all areas of life. That is why artificial intelligence was a central theme of the last G7 summit.<\/p>\n

At this international meeting, presidents and prime ministers of Western democracies addressed the issue of AI from different perspectives: how countries and their states can harness it for economic progress, what the risks are and how they could be mitigated.<\/strong><\/p>\n

This is in line with the Hiroshima AI Process organised by the G7 in May 2023 with the aim of creating and promoting secure and reliable artificial intelligence in relation to data protection. This summit was intended to provide an early response to the growing concerns about generative AI such as ChatGPT and the emerging dilemmas posed by artificial intelligence.<\/a><\/p>\n

Pope's speech on artificial intelligence at the G7 summit<\/h2>\n

To everyone's surprise, the public figure who most addressed the limits of artificial intelligence has not been a politician, but the Supreme Pontiff of Rome.<\/p>\n

In his lecture, the Pope pointed out the unique nature of artificial intelligence<\/strong> that distinguishes it from a thousand other technological inventions that have gradually followed one another throughout the history of mankind:<\/p>\n

But artificial intelligence is an even more complex tool. I would say it is a sui generis tool. So, while the use of a simple tool - such as a knife - is a is under the control of the human being who uses it and its proper use depends on him alone,<\/strong> Artificial intelligence, on the other hand, can adapt autonomously to the task at hand and, if designed in such a way, could make decisions independently of humans in order to achieve the set goal.<\/em><\/p>\n

In its artificial intelligence conference<\/a>, The Pope highlighted both the promises and the dangers of artificial intelligence. He stressed that artificial intelligence is a product of human creative potential that can democratise access to knowledge and free people from drudgery.<\/p>\n

Dangers and opportunities of AI<\/h3>\n

It also warns that if governments do not curb the indiscriminate use of artificial intelligence, it could lead to increasing inequalities<\/strong> and encourage a throwaway culture.<\/p>\n

Furthermore, the Pope pointed out that artificial intelligence should be seen as a tool and not as an end in itself. Therefore, we must assess its usefulness in terms of positive or negative impact <\/strong>This will depend on how it is used and the consequences of its good or bad use.<\/p>\n

He emphasised the need to maintain a ultimate human control over the decisions machines make<\/strong> in critical areas such as armed conflicts like the Gaza Strip or Ukraine, where life and death decisions should not be left to autonomous devices.<\/p>\n
