Could there be another \u2018winter\u2019 for artificial intelligence?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Some experts and those familiar with the latest developments in artificial intelligence warn that<\/span> The perfect conditions may be brewing for AI to fade into obscurity once again<\/strong> unexpectedly, just as happened in the 1970s and 1990s. Both periods were preceded by a frenzy surrounding AI, which was reflected in public interest as well as in private funding.<\/span><\/p>\n

The sharp decline in investment in AI research at that time is linked to<\/span> inflated expectations on the part of investors and companies<\/strong>, which the developers had largely been touting with great enthusiasm. Eventually, as they realised that AI\u2019s highly ambitious promises were not going to be fulfilled, interest suddenly went down the drain.<\/span><\/p>\n

At the moment, it would seem that we are in a situation ripe for another AI winter. But the launch of technologies such as ChatGPT and Midjourney <\/span>has demonstrated the true potential of AI<\/strong> for the general public, so it could be rolled out at a much more promising pace.<\/span><\/p>\n

Ethical dilemmas concerning the present and future of AI<\/span><\/h2>\n

As AI becomes integrated into more aspects of our lives, robust regulations and ethical standards will be needed to address issues such as privacy and the impact \u2013 which some predict will be disastrous \u2013 on the labour market.<\/span><\/p>\n

More and more companies are jumping on the AI bandwagon, keeping abreast of the latest developments and even investing in the development of in-house programmes based on artificial intelligence. And they are not doing this simply for the sake of it, but because executives are convinced that artificial intelligence will bring about a substantial improvement in productivity, competitiveness and costs.<\/span><\/p>\n

It is not known to what extent the doomsday predictions of some experts might come true. That said, it is a realistic perspective and an ethical dilemma that governments and AI-focused technology companies must consider.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

If AI systems do end up collecting data indiscriminately on a massive scale, we must ask ourselves who will have access to that information (governments? companies?) and whether a proportionate fine will be imposed depending on how it is misused.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

There\u2019s no doubt that some of the controversial issues surrounding artificial intelligence could provide the inspiration for an episode of Black Mirror.
