In the context of new technologies, development and programming, tokens are digital units that represent assets or rights within a network blockchain. These assets can range from cryptocurrencies to more specific assets, such as property, votes on a decentralised governance platform or even processing time on a distributed computing network.

The difference between a token and a cryptocurrency

It is crucial to distinguish between tokens and cryptocurrencies. Whilst cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin or Ethereum are digital currencies native to a blockchain, tokens are assets built on top of these platforms, utilising their protocols and standards.

Types of tokens

There are various types of tokens, each designed to fulfil specific functions within the blockchain ecosystem.

  • Fungible tokens: Fungible tokens are interchangeable with one another and have no unique characteristics that distinguish them individually. A classic example is the ERC-20 token, which is commonly used in the creation of cryptocurrencies and smart contract-based projects.

  • Non-fungible tokens: Unlike fungible tokens, non-fungible tokens (NFTs) are unique and indivisible, making them ideal for representing unique digital assets, such as digital artworks or virtual properties. NFTs use standards such as ERC-721 to ensure their uniqueness.

  • Community tokens: Community tokens are a way of involving the community in decision-making within a project. These tokens are often used for voting and decentralised governance, allowing holders to influence the direction of the platform.

  • Security tokens: Security tokens represent assets that comply with financial regulations. They are backed by real-world assets, such as shares or property, and are subject to securities laws. These tokens offer a more efficient and accessible way to participate in traditional investments.

  • Utility tokens: Utility tokens grant access to specific services or features within a platform. They can be used to pay fees, obtain discounts or access exclusive features. This type of token is common in blockchain projects that offer specific services.

  • Governance tokens: Governance tokens give holders decision-making power over changes to the network, protocol updates and other important decisions. Holding these tokens often correlates with influence over the project’s development and direction.

In conclusion, tokens are fundamental elements of the blockchain ecosystem, acting as digital representations of assets or rights. The variety of token types reflects the versatility of this technology, ranging from the representation of unique assets to the active involvement of the community in decision-making.
