Meta tags are snippets of text that describe the content of a web page; they do not appear on the page itself, but in the HTML code, and help search engines understand the content of the page. Although they are not as critical to SEO (search engine optimisation) as they once were, meta-tags still play a role in improving the visibility and description of websites in search results.

What is a meta-label?

A metatag is a piece of information that describes or provides metadata about other data. In the context of the web, metatags are code elements HTML which are included in the header section of a web page tags, which provide information about the content of the page, such as the title, description and keywords. These tags are not visible to users visiting the page, but are visible to search engines and other indexing robots that use them to understand and rank the page content.

Meta-labels play an important role in the web positioning and search engine optimisation (SEO), The use of cookies affects the way in which web pages are displayed in search results and their relevance to users.

SEO and metatags

In the field of SEO, metatags are a fundamental tool to improve the visibility and performance of a web page in search engines. Some of the most relevant metatags for SEO are:

  • Title (title tag): is the title of the page that appears in search results and in the browser tab. A well-written and optimised title can improve the click-through rate (CTR) and the position of the page in search results.

  • Description (meta description): is a short description of the page content that appears below the title in search results. Although it is not a direct ranking factor, a good description can attract users and increase the click-through rate.

  • Keywords (meta keywords): In the past, this tag was used to provide search engines with a list of keywords relevant to the page. However, it has now lost its importance, as Google and other search engines no longer take this tag into account for page ranking.

Main metatags

Some of the main metatags that are still relevant for SEO include:

  • Title meta tag: Define the title of the page, which is crucial for both SEO and user experience.

  • Description meta tag: It provides a description of the page, which search engines can use as a snippet in search results.

  • Robots meta tag: Tells search engines how to crawl and index a web page or website.

  • Viewport meta tag: Essential for responsive web design, it indicates how a page should be displayed on mobile devices.

Although meta-tags do not carry the same weight as they once did in the search engine algorithm, they are still an important part of a well-rounded SEO strategy. They help search engines better understand the content and relevance of a page, and can improve the user experience by providing clear and concise information in search results. Therefore, it is important to optimise meta tags effectively to improve a website's online visibility.
